So, bro, the honest answer is “very popular, but not everywhere, and less dominant than it used to be”. Plenty of articles on this question run on vibes and invented market-share percentages. We went to the regulators’ own spreadsheets instead. One caveat runs through every row: regulators report blackjack separately only for land-based tables. Online figures lump blackjack in with roulette, baccarat and other table games, so anyone quoting a precise “online blackjack market share” is guessing.

Blackjack in Nevada: Still the Biggest Pit, No Longer the Biggest Earner

Nevada is the best long-run record of blackjack’s popularity because the Gaming Control Board has reported units (tables) and win for every game for decades, and the UNLV Center for Gaming Research turns those reports into a 40-year series. The picture is clear.

• In 1985, blackjack (“twenty-one” in the reports) took up about 81% of Nevada’s table games and produced 56.26% of table win.
• By 2025 it was down to 51.48% of tables and 30.37% of table win.
• Baccarat has out-earned blackjack in most years since 2010. In 2025 it won $1.44 billion from 421 tables, against $1.20 billion from 1,947 blackjack tables.
• Roulette roughly doubled its share of tables over the period, to 11.21% in 2025, and “other” games such as three card poker and pai gow poker took much of the space blackjack gave up.

The last column is simple division (win divided by tables) and shows why the casino floor looks the way it does. A blackjack table earns far less than a baccarat table, but blackjack is the game the broad mass of visitors sits down to, at limits from a few dollars up. Baccarat’s win is concentrated in a small number of very high-stakes players, which is also why the UNLV report notes that heavier reliance on baccarat makes Strip results more volatile.

In 2024 the two games were almost level: blackjack won $1.34 billion (32.75% of table win) from 2,015 tables and baccarat $1.39 billion (34.05%) from 426 tables. So by the number of tables and players, blackjack remains Nevada’s main table game. By money won, it has been second for most of the last 15 years.

Why blackjack lost ground

Michael Shackleford, the actuary behind Wizard of Odds, tracked the same trend in Nevada data (blackjack fell from 74.0% of tables in 1990 to 55.6% in 2009) and offered four reasons: poker-based table games drawing players away, casinos comping blackjack less generously than other games, rules getting worse, and blackjack simply ageing as a product. Macau and Asia: Baccarat Country

If Nevada shows blackjack slipping, Macau shows how small it can be in a market built around another game. The Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau (DICJ) reports revenue for every game type. For full-year 2025:

Baccarat (VIP plus mass) earned roughly 78 times as much as blackjack in Macau in 2025. Blackjack did grow, from MOP 2,629 million in 2024 to MOP 2,717 million, but it is a side game there. The usual explanations are cultural (baccarat’s long history with Chinese players and its role in the junket-led VIP business) and practical: baccarat has no player decisions to slow the table down and suits very large bets. Treat those as context rather than measured facts; the revenue split itself is the hard number.

How Popular Is Blackjack Online?

This is where the data gets thin. Regulated online markets report revenue by broad category, and blackjack sits inside “table games” or “casino”. Here is what can be said with primary numbers.

United States

Eight states have legalised online casinos; seven markets are live (NJ, PA, MI, WV, CT, DE, RI), and Maine legalised a tribal-only market (LD 1164: became law without the governor’s signature in January 2026, effective 29 Jul 2026) that has not launched (Oct 2026). Pennsylvania is the most useful of them because the Gaming Control Board splits online revenue into slots, table games and poker every month. In December 2025, Pennsylvania online casinos reported $194.6 million from slots, $62.8 million from table games and $2.3 million from poker. Table games, where online blackjack is a large part alongside roulette and baccarat, were therefore about 24% of iGaming revenue, and online table revenue was not far behind the $79.3 million won by the state’s land-based table pits that month. Across all of 2025, Pennsylvania iGaming revenue reached $2.78 billion, up 27.22% on 2024.

Great Britain

The UK Gambling Commission reports that online casino games generated £5.0 billion of gross gambling yield (GGY) in the year to March 2025, and £4.2 billion of that came from slots. Everything else in online casino, blackjack, roulette, baccarat, game shows and poker-style table games together, shared about £0.8 billion. In other words, slots are around five times bigger than all table and live games combined in the British online market.

Live dealer studios

Live dealer games are the clearest sign of blackjack’s online pull, because blackjack and roulette were the first live tables offered and remain staples in every studio lobby. Evolution, the largest live casino supplier, reported net revenue of €2,066.5 million for 2025 and says it supplies about 870 operators. Why Blackjack Stays So Popular

1. One of the lowest house edges in the casino

Played with basic strategy on good rules (six decks, dealer stands on soft 17, double after split and late surrender allowed), blackjack has a house edge of about 0.28%. The player wins 42.43% of hands, pushes 8.48% and loses 49.09%, with the gap made up by 3:2 blackjacks, doubles and splits (Wizard of Odds figures).

Worked example: you play 100 hands at $10, so $1,000 goes across the felt. On a 3:2 table with basic strategy, the long-run cost is about $2.80. Switch to a 6:5 table and the same session costs roughly $16.70, six times more, for the same game with one payout changed. Short sessions swing far more than this either way; the standard deviation of a blackjack hand is about 1.14 units, so 100 hands at $10 can easily end $100 up or down.

2. Decisions that matter

Slots and roulette give you no way to change the odds. In blackjack, your choice to hit, stand, double or split changes the result, and a free basic strategy chart is all you need to play close to perfectly. That sense of control is a big part of the appeal, even though the casino keeps a small edge against perfect play.

3. Simple to learn, quick to play

The rules fit on a postcard: beat the dealer without going over 21. Card values are easy, rounds are short, and online tables deal far faster than live pits. For players coming from slots, blackjack is usually the first table game they try, alongside roulette.
