Online roulette for Australians: legal picture, European vs American house edge, payouts table, bonus maths and five casinos we checked in October 2026.

Australians can play roulette online only at offshore casinos, because no online casino is licensed to offer casino games to people in Australia. If you do play, pick a European or French single-zero wheel: the house edge is 2.70% on European roulette and as low as 1.35% on even-money bets with the French la partage rule, against 5.26% on American double-zero wheels. Below are the five casinos we checked from an Australian connection on 8 October 2026, what their roulette lobbies carry, and the maths that matters more than any system.

Spin it to win it, Bros? The wheel has no memory, no mood and no idea you are on a hot streak, so this page skips the folklore and sticks to odds, payouts and the fine print. If gambling stops being fun, call Gambling Help Online on 1800 858 858, free and confidential, 24 hours a day.

The Interactive Gambling Act 2001 (IGA) makes it an offence for an operator to offer online casino games, roulette included, to people in Australia. Playing is not an offence for you, but it does mean every online roulette site that takes Australians is offshore and holds no Australian licence. The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) has had 1,822 illegal gambling sites blocked since November 2019 (as of 24 September 2026), and we removed casinos from this page whose domains appear on that list.

Three practical consequences follow. BetStop, the National Self-Exclusion Register live since 21 August 2023, covers licensed Australian wagering providers only, not offshore casinos. The credit card ban that has applied to licensed wagering since 11 June 2024 does not reach offshore sites, although many Australian banks block gambling card payments on their own. And if an offshore casino refuses a withdrawal, there is no Australian body that will take your complaint. Our guide to safer casino choices covers what to check before you deposit anywhere.

Roulette is fully legal in Australia’s land-based casinos. Crown Melbourne, Crown Perth and The Star Sydney all list roulette tables and electronic roulette terminals on their own websites, and that remains the only licensed way to play the game for real money in this country.

Roulette Lobbies at the Five Casinos (8 October 2026)

We loaded each live casino lobby from an Australian connection. Table line-ups change week to week, so treat this as a snapshot. We saw no Evolution tables in any of these lobbies; the studios are smaller suppliers such as ICONIC21, LuckyStreak, Winfinity, Plati+ and Pragmatic Play Live.

European, French or American: Pick the Wheel First

The single most important choice in roulette is the wheel, because it sets the house edge on almost every bet you make. Everything else, from betting systems to “hot numbers”, is noise by comparison.

Wheel Pockets House edge Expected loss per A$100 staked Notes
French (la partage / en prison) 37 (0 to 36) 1.35% on even-money bets, 2.70% on others A$1.35 on red/black Half of an even-money bet comes back (or stays “in prison”) when zero lands
European 37 (0 to 36) 2.70% A$2.70 The standard online table
American 38 (0, 00, 1 to 36) 5.26%; 7.89% on the 0-00-1-2-3 top line A$5.26 Double zero almost doubles the cost

Here is where the 2.70% comes from. A A$1 straight-up bet on a European wheel wins 35 to 1 once in 37 spins on average and loses the other 36 times. Over 37 spins you stake A$37, win A$35 plus your A$1 back once, and lose A$1 net. That A$1 out of A$37 is the 2.70% edge. Add a second zero, as on the American wheel, and you lose A$2 out of every A$38, or 5.26%.

French la partage cuts the even-money cost in half. When zero lands, a A$10 bet on red returns A$5 instead of losing all A$10, so the expected loss falls from 27 cents to about 13.5 cents per A$10 bet. That rule applies only to even-money bets (red/black, odd/even, 1-18/19-36), so a French table is only better than a European table if those are the bets you make.

Roulette Bets, Payouts and Odds

Every standard bet on a European wheel carries the same 2.70% edge; what changes is how often you win and how much. Use this table to match the bet to the session you want.

Bet Numbers covered Payout Chance to win (European) Chance to win (American)
Straight up 1 35:1 2.70% 2.63%
Split 2 17:1 5.41% 5.26%
Street 3 11:1 8.11% 7.89%
Corner 4 8:1 10.81% 10.53%
Six line 6 5:1 16.22% 15.79%
Dozen or column 12 2:1 32.43% 31.58%
Red/black, odd/even, low/high 18 1:1 48.65% 47.37%

The practical effect is volatility, not value. Ten A$5 bets on red will usually leave you within a few bets of where you started. Ten A$5 straight-up bets will usually lose all ten, and occasionally pay A$175 on one of them. Both cost the same 2.70% on average.

Call bets on French tables

French and many European live tables offer “racetrack” call bets that cover whole sections of the wheel. Voisins du zéro covers the 17 numbers around zero with nine chips, tiers du cylindre covers the 12 numbers opposite zero with six chips, and orphelins picks up the remaining eight numbers with five chips. They are convenient, not clever: the edge stays 2.70% because each call bet is just a bundle of ordinary splits, streets and corners.

Multiplier and speed wheels

Several tables in these lobbies add a twist. Jet4Bet lists Bar Roulette 2000x and Big Bang Roulette from Winfinity, and Nine has Pragmatic Play Live’s PowerUp Roulette. Multiplier games usually pay less than 35:1 on an ordinary straight-up win so they can fund the occasional boosted payout, which changes the house edge. Check the paytable and the stated return in the game’s help screen before you play one, and compare it with the 97.30% return of a standard European wheel. Speed and auto roulette keep the standard rules but spin faster, which matters for your hourly cost, as the next section shows.

What a Roulette Session Really Costs

Expected loss equals total amount staked multiplied by the house edge. Speed is the hidden variable, because more spins per hour means more money through the wheel at the same stake. The spin rates below are approximations for typical tables, not figures published by the casinos.

Game Approx. spins per hour Stake per spin Total staked per hour Expected loss per hour
Live European roulette 40 A$5 A$200 A$5.40
Live speed or auto roulette 80 A$5 A$400 A$10.80
RNG European roulette 300 A$5 A$1,500 A$40.50
RNG American roulette 300 A$5 A$1,500 A$78.90

The swing around those averages is large. Over 40 even-money spins at A$5, a result anywhere between about A$60 down and A$60 up is ordinary. The averages tell you what the game charges for entertainment; they do not predict a single evening.

Why Roulette Systems Fail: A Worked Martingale Example

The Martingale tells you to double your bet after every loss on an even-money bet, so one win recovers all previous losses plus one base unit. It looks bulletproof on paper and fails in practice for two reasons: table limits and losing streaks are more common than they feel.

Start with A$5 on red at a European table. After seven losses in a row you have lost A$5 + A$10 + A$20 + A$40 + A$80 + A$160 + A$320 = A$635, and the next bet must be A$640 just to win back A$5 profit. The chance of losing seven even-money spins in a row on a single-zero wheel is (19/37) to the power of 7, about 0.94%, or roughly once every 106 sequences. Play a few hundred sequences over several sessions and that streak is close to guaranteed to appear. When it does, a single loss wipes out about 127 earlier small wins, and many tables cap the maximum bet before you can double again.

Other systems such as Fibonacci, D’Alembert and Labouchère spread the risk differently but cannot change the 2.70% edge, because every spin is independent. Treat any site or video that promises a “winning roulette strategy” as a red flag.

Roulette and Casino Bonuses: The Maths

Roulette is usually the worst game for clearing a bonus. Casinos weight it low because even-money bets are close to a coin toss, and some ban betting on both red and black at once. The five casinos on this page treat live roulette like this, according to their own bonus terms:

  • Nine Casino, BDMBet and OscarSpin: live games count 0% toward wagering, except live roulette and live blackjack at 10%.
  • Goldex and Jet4Bet: live dealer games count 5%.

Worked example: you take a A$100 bonus with 40x wagering, so you must wager A$4,000 of eligible play. At 10% contribution that means A$40,000 of live roulette bets. On a European wheel the expected loss on A$40,000 is A$1,080, more than ten times the bonus. At 5% contribution you would need A$80,000 of bets and an expected loss of A$2,160. If you mainly play roulette, it usually makes more sense to decline the welcome bonus, or to look at cashback offers paid on net losses without heavy wagering. Our welcome bonus guide shows how to read the terms before you opt in.

How to Start Playing Roulette Online, Step by Step

  1. Pick a casino from the list above and read our review of it, including the withdrawal limits. Goldex and Jet4Bet cap withdrawals at 3,000 EUR/USD a week and 15,000 a month (higher for VIPs).
  2. Register with your real details. Offshore casinos still run identity checks (KYC) before the first withdrawal, and mismatched details are the most common reason payouts stall.
  3. Decide on the bonus before you deposit. If you want to play roulette without strings, skip the bonus code or opt out in the cashier.
  4. Choose a payment method you can also withdraw to. Our payment methods guide explains the options, and our Bitcoin guide covers crypto deposits and network fees.
  5. Set a deposit limit in your account before you play. All five casinos offer responsible gaming tools in the account area.
  6. Open the live casino or table games section, filter for roulette, and check the table’s minimum and maximum bet and its wheel type (single zero) before you place a chip.

Pros and Cons of Online Roulette

Pros Cons
Simple rules you can learn in minutes No skill element: the edge cannot be reduced by play
Single-zero wheels cost 2.70%, lower than most pokies RNG speed can multiply the hourly cost
French tables cut even-money cost to 1.35% Weak bonus contribution (0% to 10%)
Wide choice of stakes and live studios Offshore sites only, with no Australian complaint route

Who Online Roulette Suits

Roulette suits players who want a simple, social-feeling game with clear odds and who are happy to pay a known price for it. It suits low-stakes players who stick to even-money or dozen bets on a single-zero wheel and like a slower live table. It does not suit anyone chasing losses, anyone hoping a system will produce income, or bonus hunters, because contribution rates make wagering requirements very expensive on roulette.

If you want a game where your decisions do lower the edge, look at blackjack with basic strategy, or the banker bet in baccarat. Our games hub compares all the main casino games side by side.

Play It Safe

Decide on a session budget before you start and treat it as the cost of the night, not as money to be won back. Use deposit limits, keep sessions short on fast RNG tables, and never borrow to gamble. Gambling Help Online offers free, confidential support 24/7 on 1800 858 858 or at gamblinghelponline.org.au, and our responsible gaming page lists more tools.

Frequently Asked Questions

No online casino is licensed to offer roulette to people in Australia. Under the Interactive Gambling Act 2001, offering online casino games to Australians is an offence for the operator, not the player. The sites that take Australian players are offshore, so there is no Australian regulator to complain to if something goes wrong.

Which roulette has the best odds?

French roulette with the la partage or en prison rule is best for even-money bets, with a house edge of 1.35%. Standard European single-zero roulette has a 2.70% edge on every bet, and American double-zero roulette has 5.26% (7.89% on the five-number top line bet).

Can you win at online roulette in the long run?

No betting pattern changes the house edge. Every spin is independent, so systems such as Martingale or Fibonacci only rearrange when you win and lose. Over enough spins the expected loss is the total amount staked multiplied by the house edge, 2.70% on a European wheel.

Is live roulette better than RNG roulette?

The maths is the same when the wheel is the same: a European wheel has a 2.70% edge whether a dealer spins it or a random number generator decides it. Live roulette is slower, often about 30 to 60 spins an hour compared with hundreds on a fast RNG game, which keeps the hourly cost lower at the same stake.

Does roulette count toward a casino bonus?

Usually only partly. At Nine Casino, BDMBet and OscarSpin, live roulette counts 10% toward wagering, and at Goldex and Jet4Bet live dealer games count 5%. A A$100 bonus with 40x wagering needs A$4,000 of eligible play, which at 10% means A$40,000 of live roulette bets.

What is the minimum bet at online roulette?

It depends on the table. Many RNG roulette games start from about A$0.10 a spin and many live tables start from about A$0.20 to A$1, while VIP tables start much higher. The minimum is shown on the table before you sit down.

Where can I get help if roulette stops being fun?

Gambling Help Online is free and confidential, 24 hours a day, on 1800 858 858 or at gamblinghelponline.org.au. Our responsible gaming page also lists deposit limits and self-exclusion tools.
